How to Win: Case Study -- Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam
Alexander Hanrath
VP Corporate Development and Finance
Nualight
Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, Europe’s 4th busiest hub, is committed to being carbon neutral by 2012. LED lighting firm Lumoluce (part of Nualight group) designed a dynamic lighting system based on “WAVE” dimming, which cuts energy costs by more than 65% while improving delivered light quality. In addition to basic LED efficiency, the WAVE system adds optical efficiency and an efficient system of dimming and motion detecting. Key to success is the user’s experience of high quality light throughout the dimming cycle. Optics and dimming efficiency allow the Lu-Air luminaire to retain its white colour temperature integrity (4000K, Ra80) down to 90% dimmed levels while gaining in lumens per watt. The ability to configure the high and low dimming points, and the speed at which the dimming occurs, mean that this system can be tailored to fit a variety of locations (from baggage areas with high density traffic to lower density airport piers). This case study shows the potential to add value above and beyond LEDs by a system approach including controls and optical efficiency.

Perspective on the Dynamics of the Korean LED Market
Danny Noh
President
LED TechNoh
While the LED market has presented an optimistic future to the world for many reasons, Korea has been in the front seat of roller coaster ride for last two years. Major MOCVD suppliers put forth the biggest effort of sales and customer service in 2009 and 2010, thanks to the two biggest display makers; thus the largest MOCVD orders occurred in 2010. However, the situation in 2011 has been drastically reversed, and there were no MOCVD orders. Moreover, the LED lighting market didn’t show any considerable growth, similar to the situation in other countries, except Japan. This presentation will provide a review of the dynamics of the Korean LED market of 2011 and 2012, and will address recent developments, including government initiatives and a support plan to encourage growth for both large and small-to-medium size companies.
Dr. Danny Noh is an independent consultant in various market sectors of LED supply chain from market research, solid-state lighting application, packaging, epi/chip, sapphire ingot to MOCVD manufacturing technology.
